Playing college sports is not an easy task, let alone getting into a college. It takes lots of dedication, hard work, and the right mindset.

Recently, a student from Lakeview has received a number of Division 2 offers and has just received a Division 1 offer from Western Illinois.

This means they will have the opportunity to not only save money on college tuition, but he will also get to play football at the next level.

For some people, this is their goal and they chose to work really hard to get these kinds of offers.

Harold Irby, ‘20 stated, “This is something I’ve always dreamed about as a kid, so it was really mind blowing to receive these offers.”

Of course, one must always have a backup plan just in case.

Irby said, “There’s a slim, slim chance of playing at the professional level or collegiate level, so I would like to study something in the medical field.”

Opportunities like these also come from the player’s coaches, which affects them and other people, as well.

Coach Patrick Threet said, “I think it’s a great thing for Harold, our team, and our school. It shows that we have kids that can qualify academically, can qualify athletically, and that I can speak about the character of them.”

Threet continued, “I think he’ll be the third or fourth division one player, that I’ve had the opportunity to coach.”

Being offered scholarships can also be really beneficial to the student receiving them as they can help out the student a lot.

“It doesn’t really matter what level you go to, if you can use your grades, or if you can use athletics to save you money to get an education, you win, it doesn’t matter,” added Threet.
