For over 9 years, Lakeview has been doing a fundraiser to raise money for children with Leukemia and Lymphoma, and this year is no exception. Lakeview’s Student Council helps organize this fundraiser, through the “Hero Squad” association. The goal is to donate “pennies for pasta”, meaning that even a little donation can go a long way.

“This is to raise money for childhood Leukemia and Lymphoma research, which is one of the most prevalent form of childhood cancer. All of the money will go to the Leukemia and and Lymphoma society,” stated Stephanie Givinsky, teacher at Lakeview involved with promoting the fundraiser.

This fundraiser isn’t just at Lakeview.

“This program works with schools all over the country, who all raise money to help. They do a lot of research , and they do a lot of patient support,” Givinsky said.

The proceeds of this fundraiser will mainly help American patients, but will eventually reach other parts of the world.

“This is an American association, but anything we find out that helps with blood diseases, will eventually help everyone in the world,” explained Givinsky.

Unfortunately, the fundraiser doesn’t last very long, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be helpful. This fundraiser is in effect until March 15th. Depending on snow days and breaks, it varies, however it usually lasts for about two school weeks.

Besides contributing to a great cause for children in need, there is a reward for participating in the fundraiser. The class that raises the most money, will get an Olive Garden lunch catered in.

Lakeview started doing this fundraiser years ago, and it is something that this going to continue to happen.

“It is a fundraiser that student council has been doing for a while, so it is kinda “tradition” or just a fundraiser we’ve always tried to incorporate each year,” explained Julia Martin, senior student council representative.

Lakeview’s goal for this year is to raise about $1500.

“Last year, I think we raised about $1100 as a school, so that is pretty good. This year we are hoping to raise about $1500. If everyone in the school donated a dollar, we could make this goal,” Givinsky stated.
