The 68th NBA all-star game will kick off with the celebrity all-star game Friday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m . The celebrities participating include Dr. Oz (television personality), Steve Smith (NFL great), A’ja Wilson (2018 WNBA Rookie of the Year), Ronnie 2K (Director of Influencer Marketing, 2K Sports), Ray Allen (Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer), Stefanie Dolson (WNBA’s Chicago Sky center), Quavo (rapper, recording artist).
Following the celebrity game is the NBA rising stars challenge at 9 p.m .The rising stars game is a game of rookies and second year players competing against each other. The team USA roster: Jarrett Allen, Marvin Bagley III, Lonzo Ball (injured), John Collins, De’Aaron Fox, Jaren Jackson Jr., Kevin Knox, Kyle Kuzma, Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum. Team World roster: OG Anunoby, Deandre Ayton, Bogdan Bogdanović, Luka Dončić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Rodions Kurucs, Lauri Markkanen, Josh Okogie, Cedi Osman, Ben Simmons.
“I think Donovan Mitchell is currently the best player in the rising stars game, but I think Luka Dončić has the most potential in this game,” said senior Zach Johnson.
Saturday gets kicked off at 8 p.m with the NBA skills challenge. The skills challenge is where players go through obstacles competing for the best time. Spencer Dinwiddie of the Brooklyn Nets won last year . The Skills challenge participants include Mike Conley, Grizzlies, Luka Doncic, Mavericks, De’Aaron Fox, Kings, Nikola Jokic, Nuggets, Kyle Kuzma, Lakers, Jayson Tatum, Celtics, Nikola Vucevic, Magic, Trae Young,Hawks.
“I think Luka Doncic will win the skills challenge because he is currently playing the best through my eyes and I just have a gut feeling,” said junior Ethan Winiarski.
After the skills challenge is the NBA 3 point contest at 8 p.m. Last year Devin Booker won the 3 point contest. The 3 point shooters are Devin Booker, Suns, Seth Curry, Trail Blazers, Stephen Curry, Warriors, Danny Green, Raptors, Joe Harris, Nets, Buddy Hield, King, Damian Lillard, Trail Blazers, Khris Middleton, Bucks, Dirk Nowitzki, Mavericks, Kemba Walker, Hornets.
“I think everyone is sleeping on Buddy Hield, I think that he will win this contest,” said senior Emilio Esparza.
The last Saturday event is the NBA dunk contest. Donovan Mitchell won the dunk contest last year. The high flyers of this contest are Miles Bridges, Hornets, John Collins, Hawks, Hamidou Diallo, Thunder, Dennis Smith Jr., Knicks.
“I don’t have a for sure pick yet, but the I think the final two will be Dennis Smith Jr, or the Hornets own Miles Bridges,” said junior Hunter Beresford.
Finally there’s Sunday’s big game, the NBA all-star game at 8 p.m. Lebron James was the MVP oh the game last year. This year Lebron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo are captains and had the opportunity to draft their team of all stars voted by fans. Team Lebron starters are: LeBron James, Kevin Durant (first Team LeBron pick),Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, James Harden. The reserves are : Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, Damian Lillard, Ben Simmons, LaMarcus Aldridge, Karl-Anthony Towns, Bradley Beal, Dwyane Wade.
Team Giannis starters are: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry (first Team Giannis pick), Joel Embiid, Paul George, Kemba Walker. Giannis reserves are: Khris Middleton, Nikola Jokic, Russell Westbrook, Blake Griffin, D’Angelo Russell, Nikola Vucevic, Kyle Lowry, Dirk Nowitzki.
“I think team Giannis will win because they have more explosive players and longer players ,” said freshman Emilio Delacruz.
