YouTube was created on Feb. 14, 2005.   By PayPal employees, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, as a video sharing website so users could share and view content.

Loren Gagnon, ‘21 said,  “He thinks YouTube is better to watch videos on”.

Gagnon said that “YouTube has more verity on the platform”.

In Nov. 2005, venture Firm Sequoia Capital invested an initial 3.5 million.  Roelof Botha, a partner of the CFO of PayPal, joined YouTube’s board of directors in April 2006 Sequoia and Artis Capital invested 8 million dollars.   In November 2006 Google purchased YouTube for 1.65 billion dollars.

Gagnon stated, “YouTube can’t be taken down because it is a juggernaut of a website”.

YouTube has had a social impact on the world as we know it .  YouTube has helped both private individuals and large production companies to grow audenses.  In Dec. 2005 the YouTube website was getting 8 million views a day.

Gagnon said,  “It is extremely unlikely to take down YouTube”.

The site rapidly grew in July 2006,the company then announced that the site had more than 65,000 new videos were made everyday the site had 100 million views a day.   YouTube had 14 billion views in May 2010.

Gagnon said, “Youtube is unlikely to stay on top for the next century”.

Tik Tok is a social media app that allows people to make 15 second videos.  Tik Tok is still fairly new since it came out in Sept. 2016. Tic Tok has been available in over 150 markets and in 75 different languages.

Samantha Ross, ‘21 said, “Tik Tok is better to watch than YouTube”.  In July 2018 the app had 500 global users in 150 countries. In Jan. 2018 Tik Tok was the #1 in free mobile app downloads in thailand and other countries.  In the u.s Tik Tok was downloaded about 80 million times and worldwide 800 million times.

Ross said, “the reason why Tik Tok Is better than YouTube is because people are active with their fans and there are always new videos”.

Tik Tok’s parent company ByteDance spent up to 1 billion dollars to purchase music.ly.  Jimmy Fallon and Tony Hawk joined the app in Nov.2018. In Aug.2018 tik tok and music.ly merged to create a larger video platform.  In the first half of 2018, tic toc was downloaded 104 million times on the apple app store. Tic Tok has set a lot of trends since it was created.

Ross said, “Tik Tok will not have the ability to take down YouTube”.

There is a competition between the platforms Tik Tok and YouTube.  YouTube was one of the biggest things in the early 2000s. YouTube has a more loyal audience than Tik Tok does mainly because YouTube’s audience have been around since YouTube came out. Tik Tok has a smaller audience .  It has a smaller audience because it has only gotten big in the last year and youtube has been big for a while.

Ross said, “She thinks tik tok will last but it might not be as popular as it is now”.

Tik Tok won’t be as popular because it will fate away like vine.  It’s Audience will fate away like the app and they will turn to YouTube.

Tik Tok won’t be number 1 because its audiences will fizzle out.  Tik Tok won’t be #1 this year because there are other apps that will probably come out and beat Tik Tok.

Ross said,  “Tik Tok will not be #1 this year because more apps will come out and take that #1 spot away from Tik tok”.
