Matthew Greiner is the ambassador of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) of Michigan. Last Summer, the ambassador of the MDA, Matthew Greiner was named the grand marshall for the APBA Gold Cup Unlimited Hydroplane race.

The MDA has thousands of members in Michigan. They attempt to raise money to research a cure for muscular dystrophy and to help people to battle the disease. Matthew Greiner attends most of the events for the MDA, as he has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which is a genetic disorder that causes a progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass in his body. He’s been to many events such as golf outings, bowling fundraisers, MDA walks, and the summer camp.

In order to become the MDA ambassador, Greiner had to get voted by other people and children to take this roll. He received a letter in the mail saying that he was nominated and that all he had to do was sign a paper that said he would be the ambassador. Therefore he has to attend events and have a say in all changes that may occur.

Greiner stated, “When I was first named the ambassador, I didn’t really know how to feel at first, but then I figured out what to do and how it was, and now I love to do it. I look forward to doing it the rest of the year.”

Older brother Owen Greiner, ‘20 attends some MDA events, as well. He volunteers at the MDA summer camp, the muscle walk, the MDA bowling events and euchre tournaments. Greiner helps his little brother to things he may not be able to do on his own.

Owen Greiner stated, “I help him get into bed, get in and out of his wheelchair, charge his wheelchair, and make food for Matthew to eat.”

In order to get from place to place Matthew needed a few things to change. At home, he has a ramp in front of the house so that he can get in and out of the house with ease. His dad has a van that is wheelchair accessible since his wheelchair is very heavy and is hard to lift in and out of the van, so they had to get a lift so that his wheelchair can be lifted in and out.

Owen stated, ”I sometimes have to take off his table on his wheelchair so that it can fit through doorways. We have to move chairs at restaurants so that he can easily move to our seats.”

In order to help out the MDA the community can show up to some of their events and participate in them. Donate money, and just show that the community is here for them. Anything is appreciated. Matthew as the ambassador loves anything they can get.
