The winter season has finally come around, which also means winter activities. Sledding at the Spindler Park hill each year is a big hit for Lakeview students and local families.

The hill was opened on February 6, 2015 and was constructed from leftover dirt from the Stephens Road construction project. The city of Eastpointe invested about $5,600 into the hill. It is located at Spindler Park on Stephens Road west of Interstate 94. The hill is open dawn to dusk as weather conditions permit and there is no cost to use it. At the bottom of the hill, there are hay bales made for safety purposes as well as a seating area by the Department of Public Works. The hill is 30 feet tall and about 250 feet long.

City Council decided to make the hill to provide a fun facility for families to enjoy in the outdoors during winter months. The city is still considering other options for improving the park’s winter activities, such as adding a space where people can ice skate, but no decisions have been made.

Lakeview students enjoyed the hill on the first snow day of the school year, December 14.

Ivan Krohta ‘19, stated, “On our snow day, about 30 or more Lakeview students all went to the hill to sled and hang out. It was really fun to see more than just a few of my friends outside of school and together.”

Sam Mackool, ‘19, said, “After a few times of going down the hill, I decided to sled off of the haystacks like a ramp. It was funny to watch everyone try to do different tricks down the hill.”
