Last year’s girls varsity basketball team beat a school record by going 21-2 overall. The girls fell short of a district title in a close game against Grosse Pointe North, who they beat the previous year in the district final. After a heartbreaking loss, the girls were eager to get back into the gym to improve for next season.

Girls varsity basketball coach, Joe Charrette stated, “I give it up to my seniors. Every year, I ask them when they want to start, and they said right away. I can only show up if they want to show up. It’s beneficial because they’re in the gym all the time. Kids accidentally get better just by showing up.”

After four long months and spending two hours in the gym Monday thru Friday, the girls are always ready to get back into the gym and weight room to prepare themselves for the next season. They usually get a week break to let the spring sports use the gym for try outs.

The program spends Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the gym working on their skills. On Mondays and Wednesdays, they go into the weight room to get get physically stronger, then they have open gym ran by the all of the coaches in the program. On Thursdays, they focus on improving on their skills with dribbling drills, shooting drills, and conditioning to stay mentally tough.

Four year varsity player, Alicia Bullaro, has been spending her four years of high school in the gym. She arrives an hour and a half before workouts even begin. She’s eager to improve on her skills, and she will take any opportunity she can get to get better.

Bullaro stated, “We’re always in better shape in the beginning of the season than other teams, and we’re just always working on our skills so we’re more prepared than other teams normally are.”

The team also plays in competitive games by playing in AAU and going to camps throughout the summer. The program has up to three teams to play in AAU on Sundays. By the time basketball season starts, the girls would have played in over eighty games throughout the spring, summer, and fall.

Freshman, Kayla Austin, has spent her summer working on her skills to get a spot on varsity. She has been playing on the varsity AAU team,to help improve her odds.

Austin stated, “It gives me good experience for competing as a varsity player, and it gets me ready for the season. At a young age, it gives me experience of how it will be the next four years I play basketball.”

The girls also go to many camps that involve games against other teams. This past summer, they went to Wayne State University to compete against high ranked teams such as Grosse Pointe North, and Romeo. They play teams that are not in the Macomb Area Conference, so it prepares them to play against teams that they aren’t familiar with. It helps them improve their skills for any type of game situation. They also played in a week long camp that included MAC teams that helps them prepare to potentially play them in the season.

The girls hope all of their hard work and dedication help them have another successful season. Conditioning for basketball starts Monday, October 30 thru Thursday, November 2 , at 7pm. Tryouts start Monday, November 6 thru Wednesday, November 8. Freshman at 3, Junior Varsity and varsity at 5. There must be a physical on file to be able to try out.
