Each year the St. Clair Shores Optimist Club gives out scholarships to students who have been optimist and positive throughout their high school career.

Two scholarships are given to students from each of the three schools in the city: Lakeview, Lake Shore and South Lake. This year’s recipients from Lakeview were Seniors Eleanor Wenner and Vincent Layer.

Layer was nominated by his counselor Jackie Sorgeloos.

“I was nominated by Mrs. Sorgeloos because she said I was optimistic, always helped people, and had an upbeat attitude. She said I would be an excellent recipient for the award,” Layer stated.

Layer plans on using his scholarship for college tuition.

“I won 1,500 dollars and plan on using that towards Macomb in the fall,” Layer shared.

Wenner was also a worthy candidate for the scholarship.

“I believe that I was a good candidate for this scholarship because I had to work extremely hard to be where I am. From missing a majority of the past four years because of pain and being in and out of the ER for a day of relief, I had to work hard to balance school work to be able to graduate with my class. I also had to form good relationships with many staff members at Lakeview to do so,” Wenner stated.

Wenner is planning on using the scholarship next year at Wittenberg University in Ohio.

“I am extremely thankful that other people saw how hard I had to work these past four years,” Wenner stated.

The St. Clair Shores Optimist Club also awarded Senior Kenni’a Triplett with a scholarship for her artwork.

“I won third place for my art piece at a banquet hosted by the Optimist Club of St. Clair Shores,” Triplett shared.

Her winning piece was a picture of a flower.

“Mrs. Shur told me about a scholarship where I could enter one of my pictures I took and the rest was history. It’s a picture of a flower that has raindrops on it and it’s very detailed with the camera really focused,” Triplett shared.

These three Lakeview students showed that hard work and having an optimistic attitude can be rewarding not just in everyday life, but in other forms such as scholarships.
