On April 6, President Donald Trump called for an immediate order to missile-strike Syria. The attack was launched from two U.S warships and a total of 59  “Tomahawk Land Attack” missiles were launched.

The attack was aimed at a Syrian airbase that is believed to have used chemical weapons against innocent Syrian civilians. Days later Trump launched a MOAB (Mother of All Bombs) on several Syrian caves.

These caves were used by ISIS and it is suspected as a hideout for them. It was the largest non-nuclear bomb launched in the United States.

President Trump reported, “It was a slow and brutal death for so many.”

Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad called the attack on their country “a disgraceful act” of the United States. Assad violated rules under the Chemical Weapons Convention that states chemical warfare cannot be used in any way.

The gas that was supposedly used against Syrian civilians is a very potent chemical called sarin. The chemical was used in World War II by the Nazis and has been banned in countries due to its lethalness.

It has been estimated that al-Assad has killed over 250,000 people with this deadly gas.

The reason for the bombing was to show the Middle-East that the U.S will not back down from helping countries.

Lakeview student George Aweel, ‘17 stated, “I think that the bombings will either slow down the Syrian government from killing people or stop them completely. It could cause a lot more conflict and possibly war with the U.S.”

Although the attack on Syria may have helped many people by killing ISIS members, it will have significant effects on our country. Gas prices have gone up on an average of 4.2 cents per gallon. The reason gas prices have inflated is because most of the U.S oil and gas is retrieved in the Middle-East.

Lakeview student Tyler Burke, ‘19 stated, “The more we try to help out Syria, the more it can negatively affect our country’s economy, and Americans will have to pay the consequences.”

Along with gas prices, the U.S relationship with Syria has come to be worse over the years and many fear war in the near future. Tension started arising when U.S tried taking over Syrian oil/gasoline rigs in the earlier part of the 2010’s.

Aweel stated, “It would be a terrible thing if we can’t make peace with Syria because nobody wants to have to deal with the fear of getting drafted.”

There have been mixed reactions to the missile strike. About half of people think that it is asking for a war in the future, while others believe it was the right thing to do.

Hopefully President Trump will do everything in his power to hold off al-Assad and Syria from harming innocent civilians, but at the same time will make sure that the U.S can stay away from as much violent conflict as possible.
