‘A tale as old as time’ gets a modern revamp in Disney’s new live action film, Beauty and the Beast. The film starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens and directed by Bill Condon stays true to Disney’s original.

The film tells the story of a cold-hearted prince who is cursed to be a beast for eternity unless he can learn to love another. Belle falls for the beast while trapped in his castle due to the help of his servants and breaks the spell. True to Disney films, everyone lives happily ever after. Filled with entertaining and catchy musical numbers, it is hard to not fall in love with the film and all its characters.

For many students, the original cartoon version is a fond childhood memory so the release of a new film was exciting.

Maddie Stacheit, ‘17 grew up watching all of the Disney Princess movies.

“I really liked the fact that it matched up to the cartoon pretty much exactly. Emma Watson did an amazing job and the graphics for the candlestick and clock characters were amazing. It was definitely one of my favorite movies because Belle is my favorite Disney princess,” Stacheit stated.

For Hannah Venditti, ‘17 Beauty and the Beast was her favorite movie as a child.

“I love the original Beauty and the Beast, but I was worried that this movie wouldn’t be as incredible as the first. I was really wrong because I loved it. I was shocked because I think I liked it even more than the original,” Venditti said.

Unlike Stacheit and Venditti, Alyssa Mulford, ‘17 never saw the original Beauty and the Beast as a child.

“I saw very few of the Disney princess movies when I was little, but I was really excited to this one. I thought it was amazing- especially all the music. I loved the “Be our guest” song where the candlestick (Ewan McGregor) and clock (Ian McKellen) characters sing to Belle when she first arrives at Beast’s castle. It was magical,” Mulford said.

The film also featured Disney’s first gay characters, Gaston’s sidekick LeFou (played by Josh Gad). The decision was highly controversial, as many believed Disney did not do enough to do a gay character justice. LeFou was portrayed as obsessed with Gaston, who did not return the affection, and did not have a partner.

“If I hadn’t heard that LeFou was gay, I probably would never had noticed. It didn’t bother me at all, but if Disney was going for a gay character they probably should have done more,” Venditti said.

Overall the movie was met with rave reviews and earned $170 million at the box office its opening weekend. No matter if you loved the original Beauty and the Beast as a child or have never seen it, the new edition is a must see for all audiences.
