The Lakeview girls varsity basketball team has had a very successful start to their season, which has resulted from a high scoring offense and a hard defense to crack.  The Huskies are now 12-0 after a win over league competitor Fraser on January 19.  This undefeated start is Head Coach Joe Charrette’s best record in his high school coaching career.

Charrette has been coaching for 31 years and has coached at many different schools.  Along with Charrette’s six years at Lakeview, he has also been the head coach at Lakeshore and South Lake and held an assistant coach position at Centerline High School.  Despite his experience, he has never had a start this successful.  Charrette has credited much of this success to his hard-working team.  He often tells them that they earned all of the success because of the work that they put in during the summer all off season.

However, Charrette does not define a successful season by finishing with a winning record.  To him there are more important things than wins and losses.

“It really is about if I am preaching the right things and if they are listening to me. And that’s the key.  To their benefit, all of the girls are listening to me and to what I’m saying.  I’m happy we’re 12-0 but I don’t think wins and losses should define you as a coach,” Charrette stated.

Assistant Coach and daughter Leah Charrette commented on why she thinks her dad has been so successful coaching.

She stated, “He is very dedicated and puts in 100 percent every day.”

Part of this dedication is dealing with a busy schedule.  Charrette’s wife Danielle commented on the importance of an organized schedule.

She said, “I’m pretty involved with juggling Joe’s schedule of dinners and family events around practices, games, and AAU.  So I’m pretty involved as far as coordinating everyone’s schedules and making sure everything’s done at home for him to get where he needs to be.”

Charrette’s dedication takes up a lot of his time not only during the season but also throughout the whole summer.  The team is is in the gym all throughout the summer three days a week working on individual skills and lifting weights.

Although Charrette is happy with the team’s success so far, he does not think wins define a successful season. He expressed that there can be many good things that come out of a losing season, such as many learning experiences like game situation.  These losing seasons could give teams learning experiences involving game situation and how to manage the clock better in a close game.

Charrette hopes to continue this success through the whole season, especially against teams in their league, and throughout the rest of his coaching career.  But instead of focusing on wins and losses, he will continue to coach his team hard during the season and in the off season.
